Boot Barn Acquires G&L Clothing

August 26, 2019

G&L Clothing, a Des Moines retailer known for work clothes and variety of sizes, has been acquired by Boot Barn, a clothing and shoe retailer known for its western-style apparel, ending a retail legacy of over 100 years.

Known as the go-to place for work attire (like flannel, overalls, jackets and work shirts), G&L celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. It's because of that long-standing tradition that Boot Barn was interested in purchasing G&L.

Steve Jacobs, president of BCC Advisers and head of its mergers and acquisitions division, advised the Marcovis family throughout the transaction, identifying Boot Barn as a potential buyer and helping the family navigate all the challenges of selling a family business.

Boot Barn CEO Jim Conroy said in a statement, "I would like to commend the Marcovis family for building such a strong business based on world class customer service and thank them for their assistance during the transition period.”

Boot Barn purchased the inventory at G&L Clothing and the store will remain at its current location at 1801 Ingersoll Avenue. Frank Marcovis, an owner of G&L Clothing, will join the Boot Barn store and the company plans on offering jobs to current G&L employees.

G&L Clothing first opened in downtown Des Moines in 1917 at Seventh and Mulberry streets, attracting farmers and construction and railroad workers. Marcovis' father, Jim, purchased the business in 1981.

“We want to thank our team for providing excellent service to our customers during the last 38 years, while continuing to uphold the G&L Clothing legacy since its opening over a century ago," said Frank Marcovis. "We are excited to have G&L join the Boot Barn family, and look forward to watching it grow under the leadership of the leading western and work retailer in the country. We appreciate the guidance of Steve Jacobs at BCC Advisers, who was a big part of making this happen.”
